Indexing the coral health status by an AI approach
Coral reef ecosystems are under immediate peril due to climate change and anthropogenic activities. Globally, 19% of coral reefs have already been lost and according to IUCN Red List Criteria, a third of all tropical corals are currently under immediate threat for extinction.
Photographic monitoring is non-invasive and offers the possibility to follow the same coral colonies over an extended period. Thus, the aim of CORA(i)L is to investigate the possibility of creating an automated monitoring tool for coral reef ecosystems using photographs and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches.
